#12656 closed Bug Report - General (Invalid)

Tuner used more than one for same channel

Reported by: Nick Whitehead <nick@…> Owned by:
Priority: minor Milestone: unknown
Component: MythTV - General Version: 0.27.6
Severity: medium Keywords: tuner, backend
Cc: Ticket locked: no

Description

MythTV 0.27.6, Ubuntu 14.04.3, HDHomeRun Connect dual tuner (UK), connected peer to peer (link local). Frontend is Kodi 15.2, not MythTV frontend, both on same and on other m/cs.

It appears viewing / recording the same channel in more than one place causes more than on tuner to be used.

Watch BBC News (ch 92). Mythweb status shows one tuner used. On an android tablet watch the same channel. Mythweb now shows both channels used. Try it on a 3rd device, Kodi on that device says channel not available.

MythTV backend capture card setup for each tuner has max recordings set to 1 in recording options, because you have to - HDHR does not support multiple channels from one multiplex like other tuners do. However I believe that should apply to different channels on the same multiplex, not the same one?

It appears that with this setup the backend will only allow one client to use a channel stream, even if several clients want exactly the same channel stream. I noticed this first when recording a channel and watching it live on the backend m/c - used two tuners, not one.

The consequence of this is unexpectedly running out of tuners. Whilst this specifically happens with my HDHR setup, perhaps it is general to all tuners and is down to the backend not realising that multiple sinks wanting the same channel source could be satisfied by the one source.

Replying to Nick Whitehead <nick@…>:

Multirec with european HDHR works for me. Can you try to raise the number of max recordings?

There was a multirec-related commit to master on 29 Jan, just before 0.27.6. I don't know if it was needed or applied in fixes.

This is a restriction on the way MythTV works. You can get around it by selecting the "LiveTV" recording that is being created for the first device. You can watch that on other devices at the same time, thus saving tuners. However if the first device that started watching it exits from LiveTV the recording will be ended and others will also end.

You can also set a recording and while it is being recorded you can watch that recording from multiple devices without using extra tuners. Just make sure to select from the recordings list, not from LiveTV.
