Sorry, my mistake, it only happens with the *libmpeg2* library and not the standard/ffmpeg one. Just like to clarify, I'm not the original poster.
I've attached what seem to be the relevant messages from mythfrontend -v general, playback. It seemed to work fine at 3x speed, but any higher and (after comparing to the output when using ffmpeg) it looks like it's having trouble finding the next frames to display.
The logs are from playback of a UK DVB recording, if that's any use.

i had the same problem when i tested libmpeg2 for dvd playback. from what isaac told me this is a problem with libmpeg2. nothing we can do about it. just use the skip ahead and skip behind options.

To give a little more information (as I get the feeling the OP didn't provide enough for this ticket to be considered) - this seems to happen only with the ffmpeg decoder. "Standard" decoder works fine. I'm using SVN 9761.
