Raspberry pi: Poor performance on new versions of Raspbian

Description
With Raspbian stretch versions later than 2017-11-29, playback is jerky. Using the 2017-11-29 version and doing no updates works fine. Unfortunately, the PI3 B+ does not work with versions earlier than 2018 so owners of that model cannot simply downgrade to the earlier version of Raspbian.

Turning off verbose logging and using the audio setting audio_pwm_mode=1 gets to a reasonably good performance level with the latest Raspbian. See the wiki for details.
Note: See
TracTickets for help on using
tickets.
Selecting playback profile OpenMAX Normal and audio device ALSA:Default works well with these later versions of Raspbian. The OpenGL OSD causes severe problems and the IEC device for digital audio no longer exists.
I will look into it further to see what can be done to get it all working normally again.
