also, mythtv-setup segfaults on attempting to scan anything..

It is not a completely clean install the working copy has modifications in it as shown by the reported revision 14612M.
Are you applying local patches to your tree prior to compilation? That might explain why you are the only one reporting this problem. :)

Patched install crashing, no response from ticket submitter as to whether crashes happen without local patches.

ok, Fresh new install on 64bit ubuntu feisty - previous was on 32bit. getting the same error messages from both the frontend and the backend.
Any ideas? I can't believe I'm the only one experiencing this..
