MythCenter and MythCenter-wide Themes use inappropriate fill colors

Reported by: Geoff Newbury <newbury@…> Owned by: Isaac Richards

Description

MythCenter? and MythCenter?-wide are predominantly 'blue' themes. The fill colors for selected items are a dark green color which makes the selected item hard to read. The attached patch changes the fillcolor from dark gray (#cccccc) or dark green (#43b038) to black (#000000). In some cases this brings MythCenter?-wide in conformance with default-wide. Makes things much more readable

MythCenter? is meant to invoke another popular media center's look and feel. That other media center had (and the time MythCenter? was written) blue backgrounds and green selectors, something MythCenter? still has to this day. These are fundamental changes to one of the default themes that are purely artistic in nature-- It's not unreasonable for us to make changes, but they need to be discussed first. (Alternately, you could fork the theme and modify it to your heart's content and distribute that) I'm speaking as someone who has experienced the brunt of *many* complaints that legacy behaviors and looks shouldn't be changed simply because people are used to them-- these kinds of changes in themes that people can't let go of are sure to result in caterwauling, complaining, insults, and irritation.

Good work! Between Daniel and Robert, I have now been conclusively *crushed* in less than an hour. For realistic reasons, I will admit, but really, that IS a bad choice of green for things you have to read. It *decreases* the contrast with the text and makes it hard to read from the sofa! I will, of course, be keeping these diffs and the blue png's which go with them!

Should I submit my own 'MythCenter?-wide-better' theme?? (tongue firmly in cheek!).

Geoff,

Speaking for myself (Daniel hasn't actually even spoken up) there was no attempt to crush you, merely an explanation of why these things can't simply be applied outright. Luckily the original MythCenter? author isn't around to exert any sort of ownership over the theme and frankly, we're not averse to (positive) change. Playing with legacy themes is playing with fire a bit, though. Our users are extraordinarily change-averse, and legacy themes is one of the things where they are most vocal (and often unkind). I think you *should* coordinate with Daniel on where he sees the theme going, and I'm confident that you guys can come to an agreement on what changes could be beneficial (and I encourage you to take the ball and run with it in making them). However, it would be worth bearing in mind the look-and-feel that MythCenter? sought to emulate in any of those changes, in my opinion.
