#6079 closed defect (fixed)

Word "show" used in two meanings is impossible to translate

Reported by: pbegou@… Owned by: xris
Priority: minor Milestone: 0.22

Description

The same word "show" is used at two locations with two different meanings. This makes the translation impossible, e.g. in French "show" as the contrary of "hide" will have to be translated as "montrer" and "show" in the meaning of "program" will have to be translated as "émission".

These two locations in Mythweb are:

  • page tv/channel, which displays a table with the following headings: Time | Show | Episode | Description | Length
  • page tv/detail, which displays the following text: Advanced Options: (Show) The advanced scheduling options are currently hidden

I was tempted to close this as "feature request without a patch", but I guess it is a sort of a fault. [BR] Two ways to fix this; either increase the size of a source string so there is more contextual information (e.g. 'Advanced Options: (Show)'), or use a different word in one of them ('Display' instead of the second 'Show'). [BR] I would change the first 'Show' to 'Title'

I am attaching to this ticket a patch to correct this problem.

I did as Nigel suggested and replaced Show with Title.

BTW, pbegou is (or was) part of Ookaze group which recently submitted a very complete update to the French translation files (ticket #6965). I am myself the submitter of an ealier French translation (ticket #6911) which targeted MythWeb at the time.

We are currently collaborating with each other in the hope that we can either make a French translation which is acceptable for everybody (currently this mostly means France and Canada) or, if that is not possible, maintain two different translations, one for France and one for Canada but on which we would collaborate and only use a different terminology when it would not be possible to use the same vocabulary or expressions.

Have a nice day!

Nick

(In [22354]) Fixes #6079. Change the term 'Show' to 'Title' to make the term properly translatable as 'Show' can be used in multiple contexts.
