DVD "Up In the Air" fails to play with Internal Player

Reported by: scott@… Owned by: skamithi

Component: MythTV - DVD Playback Version: 0.23-fixes
Severity: medium Keywords:

Description

The region 1 DVD "Up in the Air" fails to play with the Internal player on Mythbuntu 10.04 using MythTV 0.23-fixes SVN 24644.

When attempting to play the DVD the screen shows a message "Please Wait" and then exits back to the MythTV menu a few seconds later. The problem was confirmed with both the original disc in the DVD drive and with a copy of the DVD on the hard drive. Based on the standard MythTV FE Log it appears the problem is at libdvdnav not finding the chapter.

Both the original DVD from the drive and the copy on the hard drive play back fine using VLC on the same system. The problem seems to only occur with the MythTV Internal Player.

Snippet of log attached. Full log from mythfrontend -v playback, general will be attached.

Though I don't know any details, a quick search of the Internet seems to suggest that Up in the Air is a DVD that uses some new form of "not-compliant-with-the-DVD-specification" copy-protection scheme. Most all of the DVD ripping programs that support copy-protection circumvention were updated to handle the new scheme.

If this is the case, MythTV will not be able to rip or play the non-compliant DVD (as MythTV does not support copy-protection circumvention).

Replying to mdean:

If this is the case, MythTV will not be able to rip or play the non-compliant DVD (as MythTV does not support copy-protection circumvention).

The copy of the DVD on my hard drive has the protection removed. Interstingly it fails to properly render the DVD menu in the same way as the original disc with the copy protection intact.

It seems like the issue is to verify that the copy on the hard drive does have copy protection removed and is a valid format. I can provide a mythtv log of the hard drive copy failing if that helps. Is there another recommendation? I know vlc plays the disc copy fine, but that's a different program and thus minimal help at best.

With the continued effort to improving the Internal player for DVD playback, is this worth investigating further?

If you want to try something *extremely* adventurous, you can try patching .23-fixes with this, which resyncs our libdvdnav and dvdread to upstream current. The only differences between our dvdnav and read and VLCs are that theirs is current, and one tiny patch on top of that. This would help me understand if a resync would fix the issue.
