Transcoding does not permanently remove commercials from recording

Description
I am using Mythbuntu 9.10, upgraded to Myth 0.23-fixes.
I have a recording and have defined a cutlist to remove commercials et al. A transcode is immediately kicked off by MythTV as expected.
When I view the recording in MythTV, the commercials are not shown (the cutlist is observed).
As per the MythTV documentation here http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Creating_a_cutlist "Or you can start transcoding, which will permanently remove the commercials from your recording." or from here http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Removing_Commercials "If you now transcode this recording the system will take the Cutlist and produce an edited Recording ready to be exported." I have found that my recording is NOT permanently changed.
Is this a bug with the software or incorrect documentation or user error?
