#1283 closed defect (invalid)

No sound through audio card when using MPEG-decoder in PVR350

Reported by: Luud Owned by: Isaac Richards

Component: mythtv Version: head
Severity: medium Keywords:

Description

When I select the MPEG-decoder of the PVR350, the sound only gets out of the PVR350 and no longer through the sound card. Toggling the "TV-sound through PVR-350 only" on or off has no effect at all.

Same behaviour with 0.18.1 and 0.19. Using ivtv driver 0.4.2.

The sound will always go out the PVR 350 card. That's the only way it works. The PVR350InternalAudioOnly option is only there to tell Myth the audio is run back into the line-in on the sound card using an external cable. In those cases, Myth can still control the volume by adjusting the mixer settings.

I got some more clear explanations by email from George Nassas, thanks for that! In case someone else in the future might be as confused about this as I was I'll add some explantion here. This might be something for the user's manual.

What the PVR350InternalAudioOnly option does

Short answer: Switching this PVR350InternalAudioOnly option on will prevent Myth from trying to use a sound card and avoid a "can't init soundcard" popup when watching a recording.

Long answer: If you are using the line out of the PVR350 directly, you do not need a sound card to hear sound on your TV. In such a system, you do not need a sound card at all. Because Myth will normally try to use a sound card, a system without a (configured) sound card will display the popup message mentionned above. So switching on this PVR350InternalAudioOnly option will disable the popup in such a situation.

If you do have a correctly configured sound card and use the PVR350 decoder for TV out, Myth will not give a popup message regardless of the setting of the PVR350InternalAudioOnly option. However, the sound will go out the PVR350's line out and not to the sound card.

You can loop the sound from the PVR350's line-out to your sound card's line-in. This will allow you to control the volume. However, if you now toggle the PVR350InternalAudioOnly option on, Myth will not control the sound card and will thus not be able to control the volume. So in this case, you would rather toggle this option off.
